The following press article describes why Buck was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“Generalmajor Buck Fallen:

During the heavy fighting in the Noworossijsk area the commander of an Infanterie-Division, Knight’s Cross Holder Generalmajor Albert Buck, fell in battle on the 06.09.1942.

As an Oberst and commander of an Infanterie-Regiment he forced a crossing over the Pruth river near Sculeni on the 22.06.1941. Here he created a bridgehead and subsequently defended it successfully against the onslaught of 2 Soviet divisions. Within this time he personally led his reserve in counterthrusts during multiple threatening situations, and the result was that all Bolshevik attempts to retake the bridgehead were thwarted. The victorious battle fought by Buck’s Regiment was of decisive importance for future operations. For this he was awarded the Knight’s Cross in July 1941. His death means that his Division has lost an outstanding commander who always kept the well-being of his troops in mind.”
