At the start of 1943 the Soviets tried to achieve a breakthrough along the road to Orel. In this context a local Soviet attack made a deep penetration in the sector of the 3./Grenadier-Regiment 510. In response Feldwebel Dix rose to the challenge and was able to either kill or capture the Soviet forces that had broken in with only 7 of his own comrades. He would subsequently be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this action.
