James Scully was awarded this decoration for his actions on March 8th 194, when he in Liverpool was a member of a party that went to look for survivors in the remains of a row of houses that had been demolished. An account of this act of gallantry was contained in the London Gazette of 8th July 1941, which announced the award of the George Cross to Corporal Scully. Scully, the Gazette explained, could have escaped at any time but he chose to remain for seven hours, in the gravest personal danger, in a situation that seemed hopeless.

A replica set of James Scully's awards is on display at the Royal Logistics Corps Museum in Deepcut, Hamps.
