He has distinguished himself by particularly courageous and tactful actions in combat against the enemy; in particular on May 12th, 1940 in combat against outposts near Stoutenberg, north of Hamersveld when he, in his capacity as leader of a patrol, was the first to enter a farmbuilding in the area directly in front and clearing the building of enemies, which inspired his platoon to advance fearlessly; as well as repeatedly moving well ahead to reconnoiter.
