The following wartime excerpt describes why Schweppenburg received the Knight’s Cross…

“General der Panzertruppe Fuhr. Geyr von Schweppenburg skillfully planned out his Panzerkorps’ attack across the Bug river and thereafter led the unit with great energy during its drive through Polesia’s difficult terrain as far as Kobryn. From here he directed an unstoppable advance that led to Bereza Kartuska and eventually Sluck over the course of just 5 days. In this time his troops captured or destroyed about 150 enemy tanks as well as a similar number of artillery pieces of all kinds. During these aforementioned actions he acted as an ever-present example of devotion to duty in the foremost combat zones. The ultimate result was that he and his men achieved a decisive success for the fulfillment of the Panzergruppe’s overall mission.”
