"Flying Officer Belson is a navigator of outstanding ability who has participated in numerous attacks against a variety of heavily defended targets in the Balkans. Many of these have entailed long flights, during adverse winter weather, over mountainous terrain during which his navogational skill has greatly contributed to the successes achieved. On one occasion, when owing to very severe weather, the navigational instruments of his aircraft were rendered inserviceable, Flying Officer Belson navigated his aircraft back to base, a distance of 600 miles by astro-navigation"
