"Has by brave acting against the enemy distinguished himself by, as a commanding officer of a section of heavy machine guns in the period from 11-13 May 1940 during the fightings on the Grebbeberg, under heavy enemy artillery fire repeatedly going over open terrain towards the widely spread positions of his guns, to motivate his men and to make them stand and hold the positions.Further continuing the defence with his section and another section heavy machine guns of which he had taken command, even when the defensive positions and even that of a Company Command post were being dismanteled and he also saw other units of his own retreat.
After the encircling of his position he was secerely wounded and taken prisoner by the enemy."
