Awarded for distinguishing himself on the 12.-13.09.1943 while defending against uninterrupted Soviet attacks southwest of Orel. When enemy forces penetrated through the lines of his left neighbour Oberfeldwebel Eschenbacher took 4 of the bravest Grenadiers from his Zug and stormed against the ~80 Soviets that had entered the German position. This bold and determined action proved enough to force the Soviets to flee, which in turn enabled the German troops in the area to pull back to a new frontline in an orderly fashion.
