The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Colonel Robert B. Moran (ASN: 0-388141), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of an Infantry Battalion of the 345th Infantry Regiment, 87th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 6 February 1945, in Germany. On that date, Colonel Moran led his Infantry Battalion against fiercely defended Siegfried Line fortifications near Roth, Germany. Braving antipersonnel mines and intense enemy fire of all descriptions he pushed forward, inspiring his troops by his bold, fearless leadership. On the following day when the advance was halted by machine gun fire from strongly fortified bunkers, Colonel Moran, completely disregarding his own safety went forward and personally selected gun positions for assaulting tank destroyers. The brilliant, courageous leadership displayed by Lieutenant Colonel Moran, his heroism and devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 87th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
