Schlamelcher was commander of III. Battalion of the SS-Division Wiking’s artillery regiment when Operation Barbarossa began. Early in the battle, on 3 July, his battalion was part of a kampfgruppe that ran into a Russian armour column. His unit quickly went into action and fired on this column over open sights. Their fire proved devastating, and they destroyed 17 tanks, 144 trucks and 600+ Russian soldiers. 27 Russian tanks and a battery of 120mm guns was also captured intact in this action. Later on, on 23-24 July, his battery once again distinguished themselves while firing over open sights. His artillery destroyed five Russian batteries and broke up the strong Russian counterattacks that threatened other elements of the division. For his battalion’s decisive role in these two engagements, Schlamelcher received the Knight’s Cross.
