Awarded for distinguishing himself during the fighting south of Vyazma. In this time he succeeded in throwing back a group of Soviet troops that had broken into friendly positions with only 20 men from his own Kompanie. A few hours after this Sturm and his men withstood the onslaught of a Soviet regiment despite being intermittently encircled during the fighting. After the last ammunition had been expended, he and his troops fought their way back to friendly lines. Sturm himself would be wounded during this breakout attempt.
