Recommendation:
He has distinguished himself on May 10th, 1940, by courageous conduct in combat against the enemy as commander of the heavy machinegun in the pillbox north at Katwijk on the Meuse. After the commander of the pillbox had been killed and two corporals had been wounded by a direct hit on the gunemplacement, the remainder of the crew had retired to the cellar. He took command of the pillbox and by his conduct, he succeeded in persuading some corporals to continue firing with the gun. Thereafter he continued to operate the heavy machinegun until it was destroyed by a direct hit, wounding him in the process.
