Donald volunteered for the British army to fight for his country.

The death of their son was very heavy for the family. After the family had received a telegram that their son Donald was wounded severely and was on a danger list, they received a second telegram a day later. This telegram unveiled the sad news that their son died of his wounds on 3 March 1945. The last telegram reached the family five days after his death. The pain of the inability to see their son or to visit his grave untill after the war struck the family very hard.
