    Biography

    Charlie Brameld graduated from St. John's College in York and volunteered for observer aircrew in March 1941. Together with other classmates he sailed for the USA to go through the Arnold (flying training) Scheme.
    Back in the UK he was posted to 142 Squadron on Wellingstons at Waltham, Lincolnshire. Following a first tour of thirty-two operational trips, Brameld became an instructor in OTU for nine months. Brameld's second tour with the Pathfinder forces began at RAF Warboys, where he learned OBOE, a radar-controlled bombing device. Subsequently he was posted to 109 Squadron on Mosquito aircraft. Duties here included dropping colored markers to guide four-engine bombers on day and night raids. Brameld had flown thirty-two sorties on Wellingstons; now with 109 Squadron, he flew eighty-five additional sorties.
    Brameld was demobilized on February 6th, 1946, and continued service as a teacher and headmaster for thirty-six years.
