"For the performance of excellent military services in time of war for the Fatherland, namely, as a crew member of HNLMS mine layer "Willem van der Zaan", which was assigned to a British minelaying department in the period from 5 July to 1 October 1940, performing his task with coolness and skill, whereby it was partly due to him that minelaying assignments in the North Sea and English Channel could be carried out in an excellent manner under difficult and dangerous conditions."
