Pinckney D. Upchurch, 6834846, Staff Sergeant, Company C, 760th Tank Battalion, for heroic action in Cassino, Italy, from *** to *** February 1944. As the commander of a tank crew he held an advanced and precarious position for more than sixty hours until relieved. Despite the fact that his tank was in constant danger from enemy self-propelled guns, enemy Infantry patrols and anti-tank rockets, he held his position and his crew manned their own tank gun and the gun of a disabled tank which was nearby. His outstanding leadership and devotion to duty was an inspiration to those who were in the attacking forces and was in keeping with the finest traditions of the armed Forces of the United States. Entered service from: Jalatia, Illinois.
