Period:
Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Flight Sergeant
Unit:
No. 578 Squadron, Royal Air Force
Awarded on:
April 13th, 1945
Recommendation:
"Flight Sergeant McCormick has completed 40 operations totalling 183.13 hours during which he has taken part in many attacks on such important targets as Essen, Stuttgart, Hazebrouck and Munster. He has proved himself on operations to be an Air Gunner of exceptional keenness and has a reputation in the squadron for his quickness to volunteer to fly as spare gunner whenever one was required. The fact that his tour has been without combat must be attributed to a large extent to this gunner's continuous watchfulness and quickness of mind and to his sound technical knowledge which on several occasions when sightings of enemy fighters have been made has enabled him to pass the necessary information to his captain for evasive action to be taken. In addition, his conscientious care and attention to his turret and guns is worthy of the highest praise and his crew owe much of their success to the way in which Flight Sergeant McCormick has fulfilled his responsibilities. It is recommended that he should receive the Distinguished Flying Medal."

Remarks by Station Commander:

"This Air Gunner has maintained a very high standard of work and throughout his many operations, he has shown courage and determination. He has proved himself to be a reliable and efficient member of aircrew and has always shown a fine offensive spirit in the face of the enemy. I recommend that the fine record of this N.C.O. should be recognised by the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal."
