Biography

Emerson was born on August 2 1906 in Lachute Quebec, the son of William John Riddell (deceased in 1912) and Elizabeth Riddell nee Campbell (deceased in 1920) and both English. They were married in 1887 in Morin-Heights Quebec.

He was married on February 14 1941 in Calgary with Neta Aileen Riddell nee Betts of Montreal and their son was David Garfield Riddell and their daughters were Linda Kathleen and Daria Garfield Riddell. Neta remarried later as Mrs. Silvester.

His brothers were John Gordon, Ruben Campbell, George Victor and Merele William Riddell. His sisters were Maria Elizabeth and Lulu Maud Riddell and Olive Stella Riddell O’Neil. His sister Horace Everett Riddell was deceased on October 21 1943 and his brother Walford James Riddell on May 12 1945.

He was an insurance agent and member of the Presbyterian Church.

He enlisted on April 19 1943 in Montreal and he went on January 4 1944 thereafter overseas to the UK. He disembarked on March 26 1945 then NW Europe.

Emerson was killed in action on Sunday April 15 1945 age 38 during the liberation of the town of Groningen.

He served with the 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada.
