"For gallantry in action at Manila, Luzon Island, Philippine Islands, on 3 February and 4 Febryary 1945. Entering Manila at dark on 3 February with the famed "Flying Squadrons", the first to reach the city, Major Bothwell came at once under heavy rifle, machine gun, 20 mm and mortar fire. The column was split by a strong enemy counterattack. H helped reorganize the formation and to destroy a Japanese truck that attempted to ram the command car of the column. At great personal risk he engaged in close hand-to-hand fighting and helped guide the column to its objective, the Santo Tomas Internment Camp. In the camp grounds he assisted in the organization of the defenses under heavy rifle and machine gun fire from the Japanese garrison barricaded in the upper floor of the nearby Education Building. Major Bothwell's brave personal leadership and complete disregard for danger contributed markedly to the liberation of thirty-seven hundred Allied internees and to the capture of Manila."
