After completing his training in the United States, he was promoted to Second Class Marine on 1 November 1945 and became a temporary Corporal. After the Second World War, he was sent to the Dutch East Indies.
On 29 August 1946, Hoeben was in East Java as commander of an automatic rifle group involved in fighting at the village of Gondang. With his rifle group, he succeeded in capturing a position defended by Indonesians. For his courageous behaviour during this action, he was awarded the Military Order of William, 4th class.
In Stramproy werd in 2011 een straat (Hoeben Passage) naar hem vernoemd, nadat al eerder het Hoebenpad in Voorschoten zijn naam had gekregen.
