Biography

Matt Pirtz Given Military Rites in Billings Thursday

Funeral services for Staff Sergeant Matt Pirtz, 31, former Roundup resident who was killed in action November 26, 1944, while serving with Company I, 119th Infantry, in Germany, were held in Billings last Thursday, April 21, at Smith's chapel. Burial was in Mountview cemetery. Matt was born in Roundup Nov. 28, 1913, and attended the Roundup schools, graduating in 1932. Before enlisting in 1942, he was employed by the Roundup Coal Company. Matt was a well known ball player in these parts, having played American Legion ball for Bill Davies on the Rotary team, playing shortstop the year Roundup took the state title. Later on he played second for the town team, and was in the thick of it in the hot Midland Empire league days before the war. Matt enlisted in the army March 20, 1942. While serving with the infantry in Europe he was awarded the bronze star. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Mary Pirtz, Billings; three brothers, Anthony, Frank and Joseph, Billings, and two sisters, Mrs. Giles Hardy, and Miss Violet Pirtz, Billings.
