"For a considerable period, as commanding officer of Our Flotilla Leader "Jacob van Heemskerck," he demonstrated courage, skill, coolness, and decisiveness in naval operations against the enemy. Particularly noteworthy was an attack by nine Japanese bombers on the aforementioned warship south of the Sunda Strait on March 2, 1942, during which several bombs striking close to the ship injured several crew members, but the ship itself sustained no significant damage."
