"Distinguished himself by courageous conduct against the enemy on May 10, 1940, as commander of an 8-man mortar section on the western bank of the Meuse at Blerick, in an exemplary and successful manner, despite heavy artillery and mortar fire, engaging the enemy on the eastern bank of the Meuse, and repeatedly silencing the enemy's artillery, positioned at various points in Venlo, thus significantly contributing to the failure of all enemy attempts to cross the Meuse there."
