The following newspaper article (dated 29.09.1942) describes why Herb received the Knight’s Cross…

“Knight’s Cross Holder Wilhelm Herb Fallen in Battle - Mortally Wounded During the Assault on Stalingrad:

Knight’s Cross Holder Hauptmann Wilhelm Herb succumbed to his injuries on the 11.09.1942.

During the fierce combat west of Stalingrad he penetrated the enemy lines with his Bataillon at a decisive moment. By doing so he enabled the successful continuation of his Division’s attack. The Führer thus recently awarded him the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross in recognition of his bold and decisive action, one which cost him the battle wounds that eventually resulted in his demise.”
