During the time period 06.-08.03.1942, Hauptmann Hudel supported the hard fighting German infantry in the forests south of Bereski with great tactical skill. He played a major role in ensuring that the loss of Bereski (on the Worja river) did not result in a tactical breakthrough by the enemy, destroying 2 heavy tanks in the process.
In the following days, as the Soviets tried with all available forces to break through to Kobelewo and their cut-off divisions there, Hudel once again heavily contributed to the armour defense in the area. During this time he destroyed a further 5 enemy tanks and, while defending against hostile infantry attacks, knocked out 3 mortars and over 10 MGs as well.
For his significant assistance in repelling the enemy assaults in this area he would be awarded the Knight’s Cross.
