In late September 1944 Viechter received the objective of blocking an important march route with a hastily assembled force, in order to buy time for his division to retreat. Despite the enormity of the task, which seemed at the time like a suicide mission, he was able to accomplish his mission without losing a single man. For this feat of arms he was awarded the Knight's Cross.
