Lt. Jones was co-pilot on a B-17 when an engine caught fire on a training run over England. Lt. Jones got the crew off the plane, even giving his parachute to the pilot, who stayed on the plane. When Lt. Jones jumped, he was injured when his chute deployed and he passed out.
