Biography

After being rescued from the decks of Grafton Carr would then see home service for the remainder of the war.
On 21st June 1940 he rejoined the 2nd Survey Regiment and was then attached to the School of Survey on 25th June 1940, and remained in this appointment for the duration of the war and was discharged in the rank of Warrant Officer 2nd Class and Battery Sergeant Major on 2nd August 1945.
Carr later went on to work as a Dock Working Foreman and living in Manningtree, Essex.

Citation:
"This Non Commissioned Officer was in H.M.S Grafton on May 29th 1940 when the ship was struck by a torpedo in Dunkirk harbour. He was among a party of troops of various units between decks. When the torpedo struck there was a rush for the nearest exit. Sergeant Carr immediately took charge and by his cool behaviour stopped the panic and kept the men quiet between decks until the order was given to embark on the rescue ship. Sergeant Carr then assisted wounded men and did all in his power to help the evacuation of the ship. His final act before leaving the Grafton was to go back below decks and rescue a wounded man who had been forgotten."
