“As Oberleutnant and Kompanie Chief in a Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment, he and his men were able to withstand 17 enemy attacks containing strong infantry/tank forces and backed by heavy air/artillery support during the fighting south of Lake Ladoga in August 1943. His tireless fighting spirit, presence at the hot spots of the fighting and swift decisiveness were all factors which contributed to the defeat of the Russians here and the holding of a cornerstone of the Division’s front.”
