The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Herman Edward Miller (NSN: 0-81278), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Diving Officer of the U.S.S. KINGFISH (SS-234), during the FIRST War Patrol of that Submarine in the Kii Suido Area from 9 September to 3 November 1942. His precise control of depth during submerged attacks directly assisted his Commanding Officer in conducting successful attacks which resulted in the sinking of two enemy ships totaling 12,000 tons and damaging of two enemy ships totaling 10,300 tons. His expert knowledge of escape tactics materially contributed to his vessel's successful evasion of enemy counter-measures. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship, and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
