Biography

Fred Cox was the second son of John William Cox and Louisa (nee East) who became licensees of  pubs in Windsor and Loudwater (High Wycombe) after his retirement from the Royal Engineers.
Fred joined the navy and served on HMS Rochester in 1938. He was a stoker and reached the rank of Petty Officer. He was captured in Crete in 1941 after being shot as he and others surrendered in 1941.
He was taken to Athens where he was treated for his wounds in a POW hospital, Kokkinia, by Major Brooke Moore before being moved as a POW to Stalag 383 Germany. (no.25906).
He left the Navy in 1948 and continued as a hairdresser in Beaconsfield. He finished his employment with the Fire Service in Buckinghamshire at the Aylesbury station.
