On the 18.08.1941 the Infanterie-Regiment 32 succeeded in forcing a crossing over the Irdyn swamp after a hard fight and thereafter advance to Hill 101 (north of Belaserje). In this battle, taking place in the vicinity of Cherkassy, Oberfeldwebel Krüger made a decisive contribution to victory. Despite the difficult forest and swamp terrain, he and his platoon were able to achieve a break-in despite the much superior enemy force, eliminate 18 Soviet resistance nests and permit a swift advance of the Regiment. For this action he would be awarded the Knight’s Cross.
