"Serving aboard Our Destroyer "Piet Hein" during and after the naval battle in the Lombok Strait on February 19, 1942, and the following days, he demonstrated courageous and tactful conduct, devotion to duty, and perseverance:
firstly, in shutting off the burst power and fuel lines in the aft boiler room;
secondly, after the sinking of his ship, during which, although wounded, he managed to reach Java by canoe via Bali, where he was hospitalized in serious condition."
