For having distinguished himself in combat against the enemy by courageous conduct on November 11, 1947 during an action against strong enemy positions near Bukit Menkirai (Sumatra) under enemy fire after he was ordered to move his bren gun forward to support the fire of his company commander on very near targets; obeying without hesitation and having to stand waist deep in a swamp he subsequently calmly delivered well aimed fire until he was mortally wounded.
