As subordinate officer M.S.D. aboard Our Destroyer H.M.S. Piet Hein during the sea battle in the Straat of Lombok on February 19, 1942, he displayed extraordinary courage and great tact, skill, initiative, devotion to duty and perseverance by a)stopping all work in the boiler rooms which had filled up with toxic fumes and where various steam and fuel pipes had burst, b)personally extracting a number of crewmembers from these rooms, eventually losing his life during this rescue work.
