"He distinguished himself by courageous conduct against the enemy during the aerial bombardments and the naval battles of 1942, as a war helmsman on board our cruiser "de Ruyter" on the bridge, always carrying out his assigned task very quickly and fearlessly, until he came to no avail during the battle in the Java Sea on the night of 27/28 February 1942, after the ship had been torpedoed."
