During the fighting of the 296. Infanterie-Division in the Scherstin-Jagodnie-Danilowitschi area in early October 1943, the Germans struggled to maintain a cohesive defence. Over the course of this fighting Obergefreiter Windisch showed himself to be an outstanding soldier, and with his handful of Grenadiers he was able to repeatedly eliminate local Soviet penetrations while inflicting heavy losses. Through such endeavours he was able to save his Kompanie from destruction on more than one occasion. For this he was awarded the Knight's Cross.
Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes
