Action:
During the fighting of the 296. Infanterie-Division in the Scherstin-Jagodnie-Danilowitschi area in early October 1943, the Germans struggled to maintain a cohesive defence. Over the course of this fighting Obergefreite Windisch showed himself to be an outstanding soldier, and with his handful of grenadier was able to repeatedly eliminate local enemy penetrations while inflicting heavy losses. Through such endeavours he was able to save his company from destruction on more than one occasion. For this he was awarded the Knight's Cross.
