The 2./Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 209 participated in the fighting along the Narew at the start of September 1944. Oberwachtmeister Schmidt was present when the Batterie sealed off a penetration in the sector of the 541. Infanterie-Divison in the period 07-09.09.1944. When the Soviets crossed the Narew on 11.10.1944 the Batterie was of the utmost importance for supporting the German infantry. In this context, Schmidt had decisive role in the defense against a Soviet attack and the subsequent recovery of the old main line of defense in the sector of the 292. Infanterie-Division. For this he would receive the Knight’s Cross.
