On the 13.03.1944 Obergefreiter Moormann and his weakened squad were in defensive positions on the edge of a village when the Soviets launched a massive attack in their sector. After being force to fall back due to the massive opposing fire, Moormann rallied his troops and led them from the front in a desperate counterattack. His bravery had the intended effect on his troops, and together they were able to clear the village of the Soviet forces that had entered it. However while fighting near the last house Moormann would be wounded by a shot through his shoulder as well as another grazing bullet wound to his head. He would later succumb to these injuries. However in light of his nevertheless successful counterattack, which was of great importance for the continuation of the fighting in the area, he would be awarded the Knight’s Cross.
