"On Tuesday 21st May 1940, at PECQ on the SCHELDT Gdsm MALLORY showed exceptional coolness and courage when driving his carrier on a reconnaissance to the bridge. It was at the height of the bombardment. Having arrived at the bridge a further reconnaissance had to be made along the canal bank to gain touch with the flank company. This was executed under intense machine gun and rifle fire. Had it not been for this coolness the mission must have failed."
