On the 24.08.1943, following days of bitter combat, the Soviets succeeded in breaking through the lines of the 134. Infanterie-Division near Kresty. However in the fighting which followed the German defenders (including Obergefreiter Göttert) fought bitterly to contain the Soviets, and were able to separate the Soviet infantry from their tanks until the late afternoon of the day. During the fighting Göttert launched a counterthrust on his own initiative with the few men available to him that achieved great initial success. Capitalizing on this, Göttert then rolled up the now open flank of the Soviets opposite his Kompanie. The result was that the opposing attack came to a halt. Göttert would receive the Knight’s Cross in recognition of this success.
