The following newspaper article (dated 17./18.02.1945) describes why Mitterwenger was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“8 enemy tanks in two hours - Knight’s Cross for a Sturmgeschütz commandant:

Unteroffizier Lambert Mitterwenger served as the commandant of a Sturmgeschütz during the bitter fighting around Raseinen. In this time he found himself positioned in a village when he received word about a group of 10 Soviet tanks. He immediately drove forwards without orders and destroyed 2 tanks from a range of 100 metres. Confused by this, the enemy armoured group scattered and was thereby made ripe for destruction. However the brave Unteroffizier had driven so far forwards that he was subsequently encircled on both sides. Without losing his nerve, he oriented himself against a formation of 3 tanks and destroyed them within a very short time. He barely had time for respite before the third armoured wave rolled forwards. Mitterwenger again drove towards them on his own initiative and destroyed 3 T-34s within a few minutes. With this the bold Sturmartillerist had laid waste to 8 enemy tanks in less than two hours while also diminishing the enemy’s attacking power to the point where they did not dare to strike again on this day.”
