"Distinguished himself by courageous conduct against the enemy on May 14, 1940, as commander of a piece on the 7th Field, which piece had been designated to advance simultaneously with an infantry battalion on the highway from Delft to Rotterdam, by carrying out this assignment in an exemplary manner under enemy fire and thereby achieving that the piece could be brought into position some distance north of Overschie and could carry out a fire mission from this advanced position in an excellent manner. Furthermore, by showing personal example, he maintained the command of his piece to the utmost, notwithstanding that forward units of an infantry battalion withdrew due to enemy fire and depressed by the bombardment of Rotterdam, causing him to find himself in an isolated position under this fire by nightfall."
