"This officer has completed many sorties and has displayed inspiring leadership, great skill and devotion to duty. One night in December, 1943, he piloted an aircraft detailed to attack Berlin. Soon after the take-off some equipment caught fire. The aircraft quickly became filled with smoke but the prompt fire-fighting instructions given by Squadron Leader Marshall were acted upon with efficiency and the flames were extinguished. Despite the loss of the equipment and after ensuring that no member of the crew had suffered any ill effect, Squadron Leader Marshall went on to complete the sortie. His action was typical of the resolution he has shown throughout his tour. Squadron Leader Marshall is a highly efficient flight commander, whose example has proved inspiring."
