On the 27.07.1944 Tittel and his Zug came under attack in their positions near Brokovska (situated on the Dubna river, Latvia). Their attackers came in battalion strength, supported by 3 tanks and a platoon of 8 cm mortars. Despite this disparity of forces, Tittel and his Zug fought hard in bitter close combat and drove off the Soviets with high losses. For his outstanding leadership this day Tittel received the Knight's Cross.
