Biography

Edward Smith was the son of Joseph and Mary Ellen Smith, who resided in Beaconia, Manitoba. He was a labourer of trade and connected to the Church of England.

Edward enlisted in the Canadian Army on December 26, 1941, in Winnipeg. His father was listed as next-of-kin. Edward served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles as Rifleman. His unit was part of the 3rd Canadian Division, which played a pivotal role in the Normandy landings on D-Day, June 6, 1944.

Just two days after the landing in Normandy, Edward was murdered by Waffen-SS soldiers on June 8, 1944.
