Henry Charles Jones was the son of Albert Henry Jones and Eda May Jones, and grew up in Cedar Valley, Ontario. A machinist by trade, Henry enlisted in the Canadian Army on September 21, 1943, in Toronto, Ontario, at the age of 18. He was assigned regimental number B-117027 and served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles.

Henry was a member of an anti-tank gun crew and participated in the D-Day landings in France on June 7, 1944. Tragically, he was reported missing in action the following day, June 8, during intense combat near Beny-sur-Mer. Subsequent investigations and witness accounts suggested that Henry was among a group of Canadian soldiers captured and executed by German forces—a war crime that was later prosecuted after the war.

Henry bequeathed his estate in his military will to his mother Eda May Jones.
