Gordon James Lewis enlisted in the Canadian Active Service Force and served with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles during World War II. His regimental number was H.41029, and he held the rank of Rifleman. Lewis was affiliated with the United Church and lived with his family at 976 Banning Street in Winnipeg prior to his enlistment.
Before joining the military, Lewis worked for the Ribbon Tea Company and lived with his parents. He was single and had no children. His father, Samuel Lewis, was listed as his next of kin and beneficiary of his estate and life insurance policy. Gordon Lewis was educated in Winnipeg and had completed matriculation.
Lewis embarked for overseas service during the war and was involved in the campaign in Northwest Europe. Tragically, he was killed in action on June 8, 1944, during the Normandy invasion. His death was initially reported as "missing," but later confirmed to be murdered by Waffen-SS soldiers.
Following his death, his father received a War Service Gratuity and other benefits, including assigned pay and medals.
