"For gallantry in Action. On the morning of 23 February 1943, Pvt. Gallegos distinguished himself in action against an armed enemy in the action of the BARIRET FOUSSANA PLAINS, TUNISIA. Pvt. Gallegos, on his own imitative and with complete disregard of his own safety manned the machine gun of a disabled vehicle and effectively covered the withdrawal of the assault gun platoon to a more favorable position from which to meet attacking German infantry. Pvt. Gallegos determinedly remained with this weapon until all vehicles and personnel had reached the new position at which he then withdrew on foot and led a recovery party back to the original position in an effort to get the abandoned and disabled vehicles. The aggressiveness, courage and initiative of Pvt. Gallegos merit recognition as an outstanding performance of duty."
