On March 23, 1945, a tragic event took place on the Westduinweg in The Hague. A V-2 rocket, launched from the Haagse Bos, went off course and hit this location. The impact resulted in the death of six people and injured two others. In addition, seventeen buildings were completely destroyed and fourteen severely damaged.
The V-2 rocket was an advanced weapon developed by Nazi Germany during World War II. It was the first ballistic missile weapon to reach space and was used to bomb Allied cities. Due to their high speed and unpredictable trajectory, these rockets were particularly dangerous and difficult to intercept. The Hague was often used as a launch site for V-2 rockets due to its strategic location and the presence of launch installations.
The impact on the Westduinweg is one of many tragic incidents in which V-2 rockets missed their target and landed in residential areas, with disastrous consequences for the civilian population. Today, a memorial at this location commemorates the victims and the devastation caused by the rocket.
